Should you share your bad race with others?

Recently, I read an article about the relationship between athletes' mentalhealth and socialmedia. For me, currently, it is almost impossible for athletes not to have social media accounts, whether it is for journaling or self-promotion.

This article tried to explain that athletes can use social media, but they must be aware that social media can both benefit and harm them. In the benefit part, if athletes post and share genuinely and honestly about their training and competing experience, they may be able to connect with fans and athletes who feel like and have the same experience as them.

In contrast, doomscrolling, passive engagement, and performance or appearance comparisons may lead to heightened anxiety, depressive symptoms and stress levels.

I agree with the findings in this article that social media can either connect or disconnect athletes from communities around them. I do think once athletes are online and start scrolling, it is inevitable to compare their performance with others who are better than them.

Honestly, I believe that staying away from all the notifications from social media and focusing on training and competing before the competition is the best thing for athletes both mentally and physically.

I think the perfect time for athletes to use social media is after the race because it is when everything is unfolded, and athletes have more time to think and reflect on what has just happened.

Truthfully, I believe that sharing athletes’ both good and bad days can help athletes connect more to the community. This is because athletes are also human, and we all have good and bad days at work.

All in all, by sharing athletes’ true and honest stories, it is not only about sharing experiences, but also about creating a sense of humility, which emphasises that #sport is always bigger than us, and even the best can sometimes fail.
